Debating 21st Century Socialism in Venezuela: Fedeindustria´s Annual Congress

Pablo Navarrete, Caracas:  Last Friday I made my way to the Hilton hotel in the centre of Caracas for a debate entitled ´the private sector in twenty-first century socialism´. The debate formed part of a three day conference organised by Fedeindustria, the  Federation of Chambers and Associations of Artisans, Micro, Small & Medium Industries, entitled ´Productive Venezuela 2005´.

Pablo Navarrete, Caracas:  A couple of years ago an exhilarating documentary called ´The Revolution will not be Televised´ came out that captured the amazing events surrounding Venezuela´s April 2002 coup in which the country´s democratically elected president Hugo Chávez was removed from office by a powerful coalition of domestic opponents supported by the U.S. government. In the end, the junta which toppled the government held power for just 48 hours as mass mobilisations by the government´s supporters as well as crucial mistakes by the new junta led to Chávez making an extraordinary comeback, flying back to the presidential palace by helicopter to be reinstated.
